Hand-Bound Notebooks & Team Zine

Let each person's single page be genuinely bound into one record that belongs to the team.

The individual format hand-binds a notebook good for a year of use; the team format has each person complete one page, bound together into a single team publication with the company mark on the cover if wanted.

ORIGINS

Where the craft comes from

A book's form is decided by how it is bound. The earliest true codices we have come from Coptic Egypt in the second century CE: folded sections sewn through the fold and linked to each other with chain stitch along the spine, which is why the book opens completely flat. Japan's yotsume toji — four-hole binding — took another route, piercing four holes along the spine edge and running a single thread into a visible pattern on the outside. It was in wide use by the Edo period and is still one of the most common ways to bind a notebook by hand.

The zine is a separate lineage: printed and handed out by whoever made it. In 1930 science fiction fans in Chicago produced The Comet, generally counted as the first fanzine. Once photocopiers were everywhere, the punk scene of the 1970s used zines to pass on gigs and bands, and by the 1990s the Riot Grrrl movement was using them to carry what mainstream publishing would not.

The common thread is simply this: you do not need anyone's permission to record something and put it in someone else's hands.
