Scent Blending

Use one quiet, refined sensory experience to give a working relationship a name worth remembering.

Participants learn how a scent is structured through top, heart and base notes, then compose a personal blend and name it. There is no open flame and no tool noise at any point, which makes it viable where space is tight but the experience still needs to feel considered.

ORIGINS

Where the craft comes from

Top, heart and base notes sound like common sense now, but the vocabulary has an author. Working for Roure in Grasse, the French perfumer Jean Carles classified materials by volatility: the fastest to evaporate are met first, the slowest stay longest. In 1946 he founded the Roure perfumery school and became its first director, turning that structure into something teachable. It is still how novice perfumers are trained.

Carles did more than name the parts. He argued for building a composition from the base upwards, starting with the slowest materials, and prepared ready-made accords — his coeurs — to be used as building blocks. In effect he turned perfumery from private talent into an ordered craft that can be taught and divided up. It is the reason a team with no background at all can compose a blend in ninety minutes and explain why it works.
