Moss Terrarium & Team Green Wall

Ground ESG and wellbeing in one team piece that is still growing every day.

Participants build their own terrarium from living moss and plants, or combine their work into a single office green wall. Materials are chosen for sustainability, and the result extends naturally into ESG and staff wellbeing narratives.

ORIGINS

Where the craft comes from

The garden under glass began with an accident. In 1829 the London doctor Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward sealed a moth cocoon into a glass bottle with a little damp soil to watch it hatch, and found a fern growing instead — surviving for years with no watering at all. Moisture given off by the plant condensed on the glass and ran back into the soil, a closed humidity loop we now call a terrarium.

The discovery changed how plants crossed oceans. The nurseryman Loddiges had been losing nineteen of every twenty plants he imported by sea; inside what became known as Wardian cases, nineteen of twenty survived instead. In 1848 the botanist Robert Fortune used them to move more than twenty thousand tea plants from China to India. A sealed glass container looks like an ornament. It once redrew the world's crop map.
