Mosaic Collage

Invest a longer stretch of time together into one collective work built to be installed permanently.

The individual format produces a coaster or a small lampshade; the collaborative format has each person complete one section of a permanent mural. Every piece arrives pre-cut and edge-smoothed, so a longer making session stays safe and focused throughout.

ORIGINS

Where the craft comes from

Making an image out of fragments is among the oldest decorative techniques we have. Around the third millennium BCE, Sumerian craftsmen at Uruk pressed coloured clay cones one by one into temple walls to form zigzags and lozenges in black, red and white — ornament that also shielded the mudbrick from the weather.

Later workshops in Asia Minor and Greece paved floors with water-worn pebbles. By the fourth century BCE the Macedonian mosaicists at Pella were cutting pebbles to shape and outlining figures with strips of lead, pushing towards something like naturalism. The real shift came in the fourth and third centuries BCE, when craftsmen moved to cut cubes — tesserae, typically half a centimetre to one and a half across. Colour and precision were no longer limited by what a stone happened to look like.

The logic has not changed since: decide the whole, then place each piece, knowing every placement alters the one beside it.
