Leather Goods

Choose an outcome that gets used every day, and the event keeps going long after it ends.

Participants hand-stitch a card holder or key fob from pre-cut, pre-punched leather, then emboss it with their own name or the company mark. The result is genuinely durable, and gets used far more often than most handmade keepsakes.

ORIGINS

Where the craft comes from

The saddle stitch used in hand-sewn leather is named after where it came from. Saddles and harness take years of pull and sweat, and a seam that fails costs far more to repair than it ever cost to sew properly, so saddlers worked out a stitch that cannot unravel by construction.

One thread, two needles: each needle passes through the same hole from the opposite side, and the thread locks against itself inside the hole. A sewing machine does the reverse. Its lockstitch runs on one continuous thread, so a break anywhere can run along the seam; break one saddle stitch and only that stitch is loose. That — not care or effort — is why hand stitching outlasts machine stitching on leather.

Vegetable-tanned leather is inherited from the same trade: firm enough to hold its shape, able to be burnished at the edges, and it deepens in colour the longer it is carried.
